Prof. Stephen Grossberg visits the Brain Mind Institute and the Blue Brain Project, EPFL

Stephen Grossberg is a Professor of Biomedical Engineering, Mathematics, and Psychology as well as a Wang Professor of Cognitive and Neural Systems and the Director of the Center for Adaptive Systems
Prof. Grossberg and colleagues have pioneered and developed a number of fundamental principles, mechanisms, and architectures that are important for contemporary neural network research, particularly those which enable individuals to adapt successfully in real-time to unexpected environmental changes. He is involved in the development of numerous types of brain models from vision and visual object recognition; audition, speech, and language; development; attentive learning and memory; cognitive information processing and social cognition; reinforcement learning and motivation; cognitive-emotional interactions; navigation; sensory-motor control and robotics; to mental disorders. These models range from perception to action, over multiple levels of brain organization, ranging from individual spikes and their synchronization to cognition. Such models are used to analyse and predict interdisciplinary data about the mind and brain, and also lay the groundwork for novel architectures for technological applications. Additionally, Prof. Grossberg collaborates with experimentalist colleagues to design experiments to test theoretical predictions and fill conceptually necessary gaps in the experimental literature, carry out analyses of the mathematical dynamics of neural systems, and transfer biological neural models to applications in neuromorphic engineering and technology.

Prior to a workshop keynote lecture on the 11th September for ICANN, Prof. Grossberg will give on the 6th September, a special seminar lecture in the Brain Mind Institute of EPFL on the "Foundations and New Paradigms of Brain Computing: Principles, Equations, Modules, and Architectures." Then between the 7th and 10th of September, Prof. Grossberg will give interactive lectures within the Blue Brain Project.
