Background

Trafficking in persons remains a pressing global issue, recognized as a severe crime and a grave violation of human rights. Despite international efforts, including the adoption of the UN Palermo Protocol in 2000, trafficking continues to exploit individuals in vulnerable situations, such as those affected by poverty, discrimination, or humanitarian crises. The phenomenon is dynamic, adapting to changing socio-political contexts and often intertwining with irregular migration flows, creating complex scenarios where voluntary migration is overshadowed by coercion. Recent studies highlight the persistent overlap between trafficking and irregular migration, emphasizing the need for nuanced understanding and response strategies. However, current legal frameworks and policy responses often fail to capture the complexity of trafficking, focusing instead on repressive measures against irregular migration and prostitution, rather than addressing the root causes and diverse forms of exploitation. This gap underscores the necessity for a more comprehensive approach that considers the multifaceted nature of trafficking and the diverse profiles of victims, moving beyond stereotypical narratives to embrace the full spectrum of human rights violations involved.

This research topic aims to explore the evolving dynamics of human trafficking, particularly in the context of mixed migration flows and recent international crises. By examining how these factors have influenced societal, social, and political responses to trafficking, the research seeks to uncover the underlying mechanisms that perpetuate this crime and its impact on victims. The goal is to generate a deeper understanding of the factors shaping trafficking and to identify effective strategies for prevention and protection, with a focus on human rights.

To gather further insights into the complexities of human trafficking, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:

• The intersection of trafficking and irregular migration flows
• The impact of international and national crises on trafficking dynamics
• The role of legal frameworks and policy responses in addressing trafficking
• The influence of societal narratives on victim identification and protection
• Strategies for enhancing human rights-based approaches to trafficking prevention and victim support
• Case studies highlighting innovative practices in combating trafficking and supporting victims.
