Background

The field of aging and immunology has increasingly recognized the unique challenges and perspectives brought forth by gender differences. Despite advancements in both areas, women remain underrepresented in scientific research, particularly in specialized fields like immunology and gerontology. Current statistics reveal that women constitute less than a third of researchers globally, with persistent biases and gender stereotypes continuing to impede their full participation in science. As gender equality is crucial for sustainable development, there is a pressing need to dismantle these barriers and cultivate an inclusive environment within the scientific community.

This Research Topic aims to showcase and promote the scientific contributions of women in the fields of aging and immunology, highlighting the innovative research and breakthroughs achieved by female scientists. By focusing on the work of women, this series not only celebrates their achievements but also aims to inspire change in the cultural and institutional practices that hinder gender equality in STEM fields.

To further our understanding of how aging interacts with the immune system and to support the integration of more women into scientific research, the scope of this Research Topic includes the following themes:

- Impact of aging on immune system functionality in women.
- Gender-specific challenges and advancements in immunotherapy for older adults.
- The role of female researchers in developing aging and immune system models.
- Innovative methodologies in studying aging from a gender perspective.
- Collaboration and policy development for enhanced gender equity in aging research.

Please note: Eligibility for inclusion in this article collection requires that the first or last author identifies as a woman. This initiative underscores our commitment to highlighting the contributions of women to this vital field of research.
