About this Research Topic

This Research Topic is still accepting articles.

Background

Physiological systems in the human body interact throughout life, exhibiting specific patterns during sleep. These networked patterns are present from birth, and are sculpted by varies physiological states during sleep (e.g., sleep stages) and disease (e.g., sleep apnea, insomnia, periodic limb movements). For instance, respiration is a major rhythm driver in the brain and cardiovascular systems, complex interactions are present. To study cardiopulmonary networks provides insights into network development and offers indications to monitor health and disease conditions. The advent of consumer sleep technologies adds a new dimension to the dynamic measurement of physiological system coupling and networked interactions.

Network physiology has been documented from the very beginning of physiological explorations. However, its utilization in clinical practice has been limited. This Research Topic aims to bring together bench and bedside to demonstrate the potential of analyzing the system networking (e.g., cardiopulmonary network) during sleep.

This Research Topic welcomes a broad spectrum of contributions, including studies on development, physiology, integration across the neuraxis (including the central nervous system), cardiopulmonary coupling, brainstem mechanisms, regulation, disease patterns, measurement techniques (e.g., wearable/nearable technology), and diagnostic applications.

Manuscripts including but not limit to original research and focused reviews are encouraged.
