Background

In recent years, significant progress has been made in understanding tissue regeneration, tumor dynamics and the role of inflammation in these processes. The integration of 2D and 3D cellular models has led to a clear progress in this research field offering of even more efficient biological systems to study cell-environment interactions and cell-cell communication. These models provide critical insights into the mechanisms driving tissue repair, tumor growth and progression. Additionally, they are accurate models for evaluating the effects of biomaterials and xenobiotics on tissue physiology, bridging the gap between experimental simplicity and biological complexity.

The Research Topic focuses on exploring the physiological, cellular and molecular responses underlying tissue regeneration, tumor growth and modulation of inflammation related to pathophysiology. 3D cellular models represent advanced platforms to investigate complex biological processes, such as cell-to-cell communication and environment, response to oxidative stress, remodeling during development and response to the use of biomaterials, nutraceuticals and xenobiotics. These models best recapitulate in vivo models and this initiative aims to advance our understanding of physiological mechanisms to guide novel applications in regenerative medicine, personalized therapy and cancer biology.

This Research Topic highlights major advances in understanding the physiological, cellular and molecular responses underlying tissue regeneration, inflammation modulation and tumor progression in advanced cellular models.

We welcome contributions focusing on the following topics:
• Cell-cell and cell-microenvironment communication and interactions during the generation of organoids or spheroids;
• Use of 2D and 3D cell models to study physiological and pathophysiological processes;
• Effects of novel biomaterials, bioactive molecules and xenobiotics on inflammation, tissue repair and tumor regression;
• Mechanisms of action of natural compounds, peptides or nanostructured materials on cellular and molecular pathways;
• Translational studies exploring the use of new knowledge for applications in regenerative medicine and oncology;
• Modeling of cellular responses to therapeutic irradiation.

We welcome original research articles, reviews, methodological papers and short research reports that provide new insights, innovative methodologies or frameworks to advance the understanding of these processes using cellular models. Contributions should aim not only to advance the knowledge of physiological, cellular and molecular responses, but also to promote new solutions and clinical applications.
