Background

We are pleased to announce a Research Topic on “The Pivotal Role of Extracellular Vesicles in Brain Communication” in Frontiers in Cellular Neuroscience and invite researchers to contribute original research articles, reviews, and perspectives on this rapidly evolving topic.

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) have emerged as crucial mediators of intercellular communication in the brain, playing a key role in synaptic plasticity, neuroinflammation, neurogenesis, and neurodegenerative disease progression. As natural carriers of molecular cargo—including proteins, lipids, and RNAs such as microRNAs—EVs facilitate communication between neurons and glial cells, influencing both physiological and pathological processes. Their ability to cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB) has also positioned them as promising candidates for non-invasive biomarkers and therapeutic delivery systems for neurological disorders.

This special issue aims to explore the latest advancements in EV research, including their role in neurodegenerative diseases (e.g., Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis), their potential as diagnostic biomarkers, and their application in targeted drug and gene therapy delivery.

We welcome submissions covering, but not limited to, the following topics:

• EVs in brain communication: Molecular mechanisms and functional roles
• EVs in neurodegenerative diseases: Biomarker discovery and pathogenesis
• Therapeutic potential of EVs: Drug and gene delivery strategies
• EV engineering for precision medicine: Advances in targeted therapy
• EVs in neuroinflammation and neuroprotection: Modulating immune responses in the CNS

We look forward to your valuable contributions to this exciting field!
