Background

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by motor symptoms such as bradykinesia, rigidity, and tremor, alongside a wide range of non-motor symptoms, including cognitive impairment, mood disturbances, and autonomic dysfunction. Despite advances in understanding PD pathophysiology, early and accurate diagnosis remains challenging. Current treatments manage symptoms but do not halt disease progression. Non-motor symptoms remain underrecognized and lack targeted therapies. Emerging approaches such as biomarkers, neuroprotective strategies, and gene therapy offer promise but require further validation. This special issue explores recent findings in PD diagnosis and treatment, highlighting challenges and future directions in managing both motor and non-motor symptoms.



Parkinson’s disease is a growing public health concern, affecting approximately 2–3% of individuals over 65 years. Its complex clinical presentation including motor dysfunction, cognitive decline, autonomic and neuropsychiatric symptoms, poses a significant burden on patients and caregivers. The multifaceted nature of PD necessitates a multidisciplinary approach to improve diagnosis and treatment. This Research Topic aims to compile novel findings that enhance our understanding of PD by: (i) advancing knowledge of neuropathological mechanisms; (ii) elucidating the interplay between motor and non-motor symptoms; (iii) improving early and differential diagnosis; and (iv) elaborating advanced therapeutic approaches.



This Research Topic aims to provide a comprehensive, multidisciplinary perspective on PD by addressing both motor and non-motor symptoms and their impact on patient well-being. Specifically, we seek contributions that:

(i) present the latest findings on diagnosing and treating Parkinson-related motor symptoms,

(ii) highlight the role of non-motor symptoms, and

(iii) integrate insights from various disciplines such as neuroscience, neurology, behavioral sciences, genetics, and neuropsychology.

We welcome diverse manuscript types, including empirical and review studies, cohort studies, experimental and genetic studies, machine learning applications, and animal research. This collection aims to foster interdisciplinary collaboration and innovation in PD research and clinical management.
