About this Research Topic

This Research Topic is closed for submissions.

Background

Aging is characterized by complex molecular and cellular alterations across multiple organ systems. Central to this process is the progressive imbalance between accumulating damage and the body's ability to repair such damage, eventually leading to chronic illnesses, frailty, and increased mortality. Changes in the immune system play a pivotal role in aging, marked by persistent immune activation and elevated levels of inflammatory markers, collectively termed "Inflammation." This state not only serves as a biomarker for the failure of recovery mechanisms but also contributes to the higher incidence of disease and disability in older populations. This research topic explores the dual role of inflammation in aging and age-related diseases, both as a marker and a contributor to disease mechanisms.

This Research Topic aims to advance our understanding of how immunity and inflammation contribute to the aging process and the onset of age-related diseases. By integrating new findings on immune-related changes and their implications, we seek to uncover the mechanisms through which inflammation influences aging and predisposes individuals to diseases. The focus will be on leveraging cutting-edge techniques like single-cell analyses, and metabolomics to identify new biomarkers and understand their roles in the immune system's aging.

To gather further insights into the intricate connections between immunity, inflammation, and aging, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:

• The role of cellular metabolism in immune diseases.
• The relationship between inflammation and aging.
• Metabolomics and its implications in cancer.
• Links between inflammation and cellular metabolism.
• Evaluating disease risk and prognosis via inflammatory and immune-related biomarkers.

This collection aims to enrich the dialogue in the field, offering insights into immune alterations with age and fostering the development of new clinical strategies.

Keywords: immunity, inflammation, aging, cell, cancer

Important note: All contributions to this Research Topic must be within the scope of the section and journal to which they are submitted, as defined in their mission statements.
