Background
Rheumatic diseases are complex multisystem, immune-mediated disorders encompassing conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, primary Sjögren syndrome, systemic sclerosis (SSc), systemic vasculitis, and dermatomyositis. These diseases can have debilitating effects on the joints, muscles, and bones, with possible systemic and/or organ-specific involvement. Recent advancements have unveiled the significant role of innate immune cells, such as macrophages, neutrophils, dendritic cells, and innate lymphoid cells, in driving the pathogenesis of these diseases. These cells not only modulate inflammation but also significantly influence the adaptive immune responses, thereby highlighting crucial gaps in understanding their exact mechanisms and interactions.
The objective of this Research Topic is to delve deeply into the contributions of innate immune cells in rheumatic diseases. By examining how these cells activate and signal in the context of rheumatic conditions, the research aims to uncover novel therapeutic targets. Additionally, the relationship between innate and adaptive immunity in autoimmune and degenerative joint diseases requires further exploration. Addressing questions surrounding biomarkers, and environmental and genetic influences on innate immunity will also be pivotal. Ultimately, this research seeks to develop innovative diagnostic tools and therapeutic strategies that could revolutionize treatment paradigms for these complex diseases.
To comprehend the intricate dynamics of innate immunity in rheumatic diseases, this Research Topic encompasses a comprehensive range of themes. We welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes: o Mechanisms of innate immune cell activation and signaling in rheumatic conditions o Crosstalk between innate and adaptive immunity in autoimmune and degenerative joint diseases o Novel therapeutic strategies targeting innate immune pathways o Biomarkers derived from innate immune responses for disease prognosis and treatment monitoring o Impact of environmental and genetic factors on innate immune cell function in rheumatology
This comprehensive compilation of research endeavors to enhance our understanding and pave the way for groundbreaking advancements in managing rheumatic diseases through the exploration of innate immunity.
