Challenges caring for critically ill patients with renal complications are significant, involving diverse clinical presentations, evolving therapies, and innovative approaches—ranging from dialysis to advances in regenerative medicine. Management within intensive care units requires complex decision-making, multidisciplinary collaboration, and integration of state-of-the-art renal support interventions.
This Research Topic, curated by the Nephrology and Critical Care Nephrology sections of Frontiers in Medicine and Frontiers in Nephrology, respectively, invites clinicians and investigators to submit detailed case reports focusing on:
• Novel or unexpected presentations of renal disorders, including their impact as risk factors for chronic kidney disease.
• Renal management in challenging scenarios, such as in patients with COVID-19, sepsis, or multisystem organ failure.
• Dialysis and kidney replacement therapies (KRT), including innovative strategies, troubleshooting, and integration with other extracorporeal organ support systems (e.g., ECMO, carbon dioxide removal).
• Drug-related or immune-mediated renal complications in the critical care context and the role of dialysis in their management.
• Advances in regenerative medicine, including cell-based therapies, bioengineered tissues, and emerging technologies for renal recovery and organ support.
• Pathogenetic insights, diagnostic challenges, and outcomes relating to both traditional and novel therapeutic approaches in critically ill patients with renal involvement.
• Complications, lessons learned, and unique clinical courses encountered in the use of dialysis and regenerative treatments.
We welcome submissions that detail the diagnosis, management, and interprofessional strategies employed—from dialysis modalities to regenerative interventions. Each case report should include a thorough literature review to contextualise the findings and enrich clinical knowledge-sharing.
All contributions should demonstrate clear educational value, highlight advancements in clinical practice, and support progress toward the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being).

Important note: All contributions to this Research Topic must be within the scope of the section and journal to which they are submitted, as defined in their mission statements. Frontiers reserves the right to guide an out-of-scope manuscript to a more suitable section or journal at any stage of peer review.
