Background

Water pollution presents a significant challenge for the stability of aquatic ecosystems and the organisms that inhabit them. Aquatic animals are consistently exposed to diverse stimuli from their surrounding environment, leading to assorted physiological responses. Among the primary pollutants impacting these organisms are organophosphorus pesticides, microplastics, heavy metals, industrial chemicals, and domestic waste by-products. Various studies have documented the adverse effects of these contaminants, including hindered growth, escalated stress levels, physiological impairment, and even toxicological repercussions. While the detrimental impact of pollutants is well established, there is a pressing need to explore advanced methodologies for environmental and biological remediation.

This Research Topic aims to deepen our understanding of the intersection between water pollution treatments and aquatic animal health. A primary objective is to identify innovative chemical, physical, and biological interventions that can mitigate pollution's harmful effects. By exploring both traditional strategies and novel approaches, such as small molecule drugs targeting specific genes and vaccine or nutritional interventions, the research will provide insights into alleviating stress and physiological disturbances in aquatic fauna. Furthermore, it intends to unravel the genetic and metabolic pathways that govern stress responses, seeking to enhance the resilience of these organisms against environmental insults.
