Background

Single atoms are fundamental building blocks of matter. Intrinsically, they are the smallest units and isolated entities that retain the chemical properties of an element. Metallic single atoms possess impressive physical and chemical properties. In particular, they offer a high catalytic activity and selectivity due to the maximum utilization of active sites. Recently, the tremendous catalytic activity of metal single atoms has been demonstrated in various reactions. The number of synthetic approaches for single-atom preparation, the opportunities in their characterization, and the range of catalytic applications deployed have been continuously expanding.

This Research Topic aims to provide a platform for exchanging and sharing novel ideas and recent research advancements in single-atom development, characterization, and applications.

The purpose of this Research Topic is to receive submissions on novel results in the single-atoms´ synthesis (various means), characterization, and utilization with particular emphasis (not limited to) on catalytic applications.

In particular, the following topics are covered:

• Synthesis of single-atoms (bottom-up, top-down approaches)
• Theoretical calculations that help to determine the electronic structure, stability, and catalytic activity of single atoms dispersed on a support
• Unique catalyst design strategies
• Characterization of single-atoms (in-situ, operando, ex-situ)
• Studies elucidating reactions´ mechanisms
• Experimental verifications in catalytic applications (incl. heterogeneous catalysis, electrocatalysis, photocatalysis, etc.)
• Stability of SA and their stabilization strategies on different surfaces
• Uses of SA in unconventional and unexploited applications

We will accept the following article types: Original Research, Review, Mini Review, and Perspective.
