Background

The International Liver Transplantation Society (ILTS) Congress 2025 in Singapore was a landmark event, driving forward the global discourse and advancements in liver transplantation. In recognition of the vibrant discussions, groundbreaking presentations, and critical insights that will emerge from this esteemed gathering, we invite the global community of transplantation researchers, clinicians, and scientists to contribute to our special research topic: "Reflections on ILTS."

This dedicated platform offers a unique opportunity to delve into, expand upon, and critically analyze the most prominent themes, cutting-edge research, and evolving paradigms showcased at the ILTS Congress. We encourage submissions that explore the most impactful advancements, highlight emerging challenges, and offer insightful perspectives that will drive progress and shape the future of liver transplantation.

Given the comprehensive nature and diverse program of the ILTS Congress, this research topic is intentionally broad and encompasses a wide spectrum of subjects. We welcome original research articles, comprehensive reviews, compelling perspectives, and insightful commentaries across, but not limited to, the following key areas:

Clinical Innovations: Advances in surgical techniques, pre- and post-transplant recipient and donor management, immunosuppression strategies, and long-term outcomes.

Basic and Translational Science: Breakthroughs in immunology, virology, oncology, regenerative medicine, and genetic research relevant to liver transplantation.

Patient-Centered Care: Addressing quality of life, psychosocial aspects, ethical considerations, adherence, and the management of long-term complications in transplant recipients.

Technological and Digital Health: Applications of artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, big data, telehealth, advanced imaging, and novel diagnostics in transplantation.

Global Health and Policy: Disparities in access to care, organ allocation systems, policy implications, and challenges in low-resource settings.

Emerging Therapies: Novel pharmacological agents, cellular therapies, ex-vivo organ perfusion techniques, and alternative therapeutic strategies.

Specific Liver Diseases: Management of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), acute liver failure, metabolic diseases, viral hepatitis, and other specific etiologies in the transplant setting.

Transplant Immunology: Mechanisms of rejection, tolerance induction, and the role of the microbiome in transplant outcomes.

We seek contributions that not only reflect on the critical discussions ignited at the ILTS Congress but also extend their implications, present new data, propose future directions, or offer novel interpretations. This is an opportunity to contribute to a dynamic collection that captures the pulse of current liver transplantation research and helps chart its future course. Join us in this essential reflection and contribute to the collective knowledge that continuously advances our ability to save and improve lives worldwide.
