Rapid population growth and the rising quality of life, driven by development and globalization, have significantly increased the per capita consumption of natural resources. To meet the growing demand for food, fiber, housing, and medicine, we are witnessing a surge in anthropogenic activities, which have adversely impacted every component of the environment—air, water, and soil. The industrial revolution and the advancement of information technologies have further intensified this burden. In response, sustainable practices in industrial, agricultural, and domestic sectors have become essential for ensuring environmental sustainability.
The primary goal of this Research Topic is to address critical environmental sustainability challenges through biotechnological interventions that emphasize zero-waste approaches and efficient resource utilization. Through this compilation, we aim to provide a comprehensive understanding of how biotechnological tools and principles can address pressing environmental challenges and promote sustainable development.
This Research Topic invites original research articles, comprehensive reviews, and case studies that explore biotechnological solutions for environmental sustainability. We particularly encourage contributions focusing on sustainable bioresource utilization within a zero-waste framework, innovative recycling methods, and the conversion of residual biomass into value-added products such as biochar, bioplastics, and sustainable materials. Manuscripts addressing biological wastewater treatment techniques, resource recovery approaches, and the integration of eco-friendly processes into industrial and agricultural systems are of high interest. Additionally, we welcome studies that examine the broader impact of biotechnological innovations on public health, environmental safety, and policy frameworks. Submissions should contribute novel insights, experimental results, or critical analyses that advance understanding and practical application of biotechnology in the pursuit of sustainability.
