Background

Recent studies increasingly reveal sex-differences in aging and aging-associated disease. For example, across human populations, women consistently exhibit greater life expectancy than men. Critical aging-associated diseases including neurodegenerative disease, obesity, diabetes and cancer show sex-differences in prevalence and/or complications. Modeling, genetic sequencing, and directed evolution experiments support a role for sexual conflict and sexual antagonistic pleiotropy in the evolution of aging. Both sex chromosome content and sex-biased hormone levels are implicated as causal factors in sex-differences in aging. In addition, age of sexual maturation and reproductive history are implicated in modulating aging. Small molecule, dietary and genetic interventions in aging often show sex-biased effects in model systems and in human subjects. As a consequence, sex is increasingly appreciated as an important factor to consider in designing personalized interventions in aging and aging-associated disease.
