Background

Frontiers in High Performance Computing is a multidisciplinary open-access journal at the forefront of disseminating and communicating scientific knowledge and impactful discoveries in High Performance Computing research to a broad community of researchers, academics, clinicians, and other relevant stakeholders.

The journal aims to encourage HPC applications enabling AI for Science and Climate Change studies, as it aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure, and 13: Climate Action. By promoting research in high-performance computing, the journal contributes to building resilient infrastructure, fostering innovation, and supporting sustainable industrialization, as well as mitigating the impacts of climate change.

Frontiers in High Performance Computing is dedicated to advancing developments in the field of high-performance computing by providing unrestricted access to articles and communicating scientific knowledge to researchers and the public, enabling future scientific breakthroughs.

This Research Topic is dedicated to collecting forward-looking articles composed by the Chief Editors of the journal. These contributions will identify and reflect upon what could be dubbed the “grand challenges” in HPC research in the following specialties:

- Architecture and Systems: Investigates the field of parallel and distributed architectures - and their design, analysis, and impact - as an important part of high performance computing.

- Benchmarking: Explores all areas of computing benchmarking, including metrics, processes and datasets

- Big Data & AI: Explores the growing use of high performance computing in building big data systems or big data computing including hardware, software, and algorithm components.

- Cloud Computing: Explores new cloud computing technologies, new uses of the cloud, and the intersection of cloud computing with other aspects of high performance computing.

- HPC Applications: Explores the use of supercomputers and parallel computing to solve complex real-world problems.

- Parallel and Distributed Software: Explores parallel and distributed computing - increasingly important as a result of growing computing needs in engineering, scientific and industrial applications.
