Background

As we look ahead in 2025, the pace of discovery in genetics continues to accelerate, marking the third decade of the 21st century with remarkable achievements and major advancements, particularly in the dynamic field of Neurogenomics.

To spotlight the latest advances in this rapidly evolving field, Frontiers is launching a new series of Research Topics showcasing state-of-the-art work from leading experts on our Editorial Boards. Guided by the Specialty Chief Editors of the Neurogenomics section, Prof. Sarah H. Elsea and Prof. Alessandra Ferlini, this editorial initiative will highlight new insights, current challenges, groundbreaking discoveries, recent advances, and the future directions shaping the field today.

This Research Topic invites concise, forward-looking contributions from editorial board members, spotlighting recent developments and key accomplishments, as well as outlining what is needed to drive the field forward. Authors are encouraged to highlight the most critical challenges within their sub-disciplines, such as gene regulation in neural development and aging, cell-type–specific genomic architecture, neuroimmune and glial genetics, neurodegenerative disease genomics, multi-omics integration across brain regions and lifespan, and gene–environment interactions, and to propose strategies for addressing them.

The aim of this special edition is to provide a comprehensive overview of the significant progress made in Neurogenomics over the past decade, as well as the pressing challenges and future directions for the field. We hope this article collection will inspire, inform, and guide researchers, setting the stage for the next era of discoveries in Neurogenomics.
