Background

Urban areas face unprecedented challenges due to climate change, biodiversity loss, and rapid population growth. In this context, floriculture plays a key role in enhancing urban resilience and liveability. Urban floriculture contributes to heat island mitigation, biodiversity enhancement, and improved environmental quality, while also enriching the visual and cultural identity of cities.



This Research Topic aims to explore innovative approaches to urban greening through resilient floriculture, focusing on ornamental plants as a key component of sustainable and livable cities. Contributions may address climate-adaptive ornamental species and their role in urban resilience, technological innovations (IoT, AI, biotechnology) for urban floriculture, and the development of new infrastructures such as vertical gardens, green roofs, and floral corridors. Socio-economic and cultural dimensions of urban greening, interactions with inhabitants, policy frameworks and planning strategies for integrating floriculture in municipalities, as well as the role of greening in circular economy approaches and sustainable ornamental plant utilization, are all within the scope.



This Research Topic (RT) seeks contributions that examine how ornamental plants and floriculture can enhance urban ecosystems by addressing sustainability, aesthetics, and socio-economic benefits. Authors are encouraged to consider green area management practices, including smart irrigation and sensor-based monitoring systems, and to incorporate life-cycle assessment and sustainability metrics for ornamental plants in urban contexts. Submissions that integrate ecological, technological, social, and policy perspectives on resilient urban floriculture are particularly welcome, with the goal of informing both scientific understanding and practical applications for future cities.
