Background

Sea turtles are charismatic marine reptiles that play a crucial role in maintaining the health and balance of marine ecosystems. Unfortunately, sea turtles are threatened worldwide from human activity. Some of these anthropogenic impacts include climate change, illegal trade, coastal degradation, plastic ingestion and entanglement, bycatch, and accidental boat strikes. Because of the diverse set of threats they face, more research is needed to address the challenge of managing their populations and to help develop effective conservation strategies.

In light of the recent global IUCN downlisting of green turtles (Chelonia mydas), thanks to decades of dedicated conservation efforts, we launch the second volume of this Research Topic. While this reclassification offers hope, other sea turtle species and regional populations remain threatened and understudied. We therefore invite scientists, conservationists, and experts to contribute conservation research and perspectives to safeguard sea turtles worldwide. We encourage submissions from underrepresented regions, in particular the Global South as well as developing countries.

The scope of this Research Topic is broad, encompassing many disciplines of sea turtle research that have direct links and/or applications to the conservation of the species. We welcome contributions covering a wide range of topics related to sea turtles, including, but not limited to, the following:

- Threat assessment
- Conservation management
- Social science (including citizen science)
- In-water animal behavior
- Nesting biology
- Habitat use
