Atherosclerosis is the most important etiology of acute myocardial infarction, which is considered an inflammatory disease with specific cellular and molecular responses.Research has linked hematological variables as biomarkers of the severity of coronary artery disease. Recent study points to nucleated red blood cells (NRBCs), neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and mean platelet volume (MPV) with a potential role as a laboratory model or hematological score for in-hospital surveillance. These atherosclerotic plaques are classified based on the scoring system and it was mentioned as a tool to grade the complexity of coronary artery disease represented by the SYNTAX score. However, there is an open field for research to explain the complex inflammatory mechanism of these atherosclerotic plaques. Research has shown that the bone marrow releases young and immature cells into the systemic circulation in the presence of inflammatory processes, such as coronary atherosclerotic disease, which are actively aggregating and, consequently, forming thrombotic plaques. This mini review article aims to demonstrate the relationship between these hematological parameters and coronary angiographic lesions as potential in-hospital prognostic tools for patients with acute myocardial infarction. This expressive relationship between these hematological biomarkers and coronary atherosclerotic plaques may be targets, in addition to prognostic scores, of future therapeutic interventions.
