Background

This article collection highlights the critical role of visualization in interpreting complex biological data across diverse domains. The first article demonstrates how the effectiveness of visual layouts, such as circular and half-matrix designs, can influence users' ability to accurately identify patterns and communicate findings in spatial connectivity data, with evidence drawn from both crowdsourced and expert studies. The second article underscores the growing challenge of analyzing highly dynamic and intricate systems, such as lipid assemblies and their interactions with proteins, due to advances in simulation techniques and computational modeling. The third article explores the unique complexities of applying visualization methods in clinical bioinformatics, especially in genomics, and discusses emerging opportunities and challenges specific to clinical settings. Together, these works emphasize ongoing efforts to refine visualization tools and strategies that can facilitate discovery, analysis, and communication within both research and clinical contexts in the life sciences.

Frontiers in Bioinformatics has organized a series of Research Topics which aim to promote, debate or to change the perspective on unsettled research in various areas of the field of bioinformatics.

To provide a critical evaluation of the state of research in the field of bioinformatics data visualization, leading experts have been invited by our Chief Editors Prof. Sean O'Donoghue (Garvan Institute) and Prof. Barbora Kozlikova (Masaryk University) to contribute their thoughts and perspectives on current challenges, latest discoveries, recent advances, and future perspectives in the field.

This Research Topic solicits the submission of Opinion and Perspective articles that provide editorialized analysis related to the field of bioinformatics data visualization by established researchers in the field. Please note, contributions to this article collection are by invitation only. By contrast, the related research topic Insights in bioinformatics data visualization: 2022 is an open call for submissions. Please inform the Editorial Office at bioinformatics.submissions@frontiersin.org once you are ready to submit.
