About this Research Topic

Manuscript Submission Deadline 30 September 2023

The latest trend in the current economy, resulting in increases of input factor prices with biased consumer responses, is the result of a combination of external shocks at the pandemic and war events, demand and supply mismatches for the transition to a greener global economy, and global climate change dynamics. To ensure long-term sustainability goals, these changes require efficient organizations and technologies to reduce the current gaps. A promising solution is artificial intelligence (AI), in which computer-led technologies can learn from real-world experiences and help with solutions for complex systems. As a consequence, AI can support structural processes and consumer practices to restore the current imbalances of human and economic activities and drive societies towards sustainable growth.

The scientific community is called to reflect upon the role of AI for sustainable market structures and economies, consumer and government processes, and innovative solutions in combination with social norms, culture, traditions, human psychology and emotions and subsequent individual and societal behavioral responses.

This Research Topic aims to present current and future research trends on the contribution of AI to sustainable economies and societies. It is the results of theoretical and practical studies suggesting an answer to the lack of theories of AI for sustainability issues; the need for treating complex AI settings with social, technical and political dimensions; the necessity to consider environmental psychological and sociological perspectives into current AI models; the use of a proper industrial design thinking approach to reduce the gap between theory and practice; and the need to consider an integrated approach of conventional, environmental and behavioral economic models into AI models.

Some examples of topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

- Theoretical perspectives of AI models for sustainability
- Applied studies of AI to sustainability
- New economic and behavioral models into AI models
- Sociological and Psychological perspectives on current practices of AI and sustainability
- Policies, strategies, and organizations for new types of governance resulting from the interactions of AI and policy making
- Industrial design and new business models to incorporate AI into sustainable practices
- Green investments and AI technology adoption
- Future scenarios of AI theories, models, and practices for sustainable societies
- Geopolitics, AI models, and sustainability interactions
- Social acceptance of AI into sustainable models
- Trade-offs between AI, human labor and the environment
- Education, new curricula developments, and professional practices to foster the understating the potentialities offered by AI and sustainability interactions

Keywords: artificial intelligence, AI, sustainable market structures, sustainable economies, sustainable societies

Important Note: All contributions to this Research Topic must be within the scope of the section and journal to which they are submitted, as defined in their mission statements. Frontiers reserves the right to guide an out-of-scope manuscript to a more suitable section or journal at any stage of peer review.
