About this Research Topic
Despite the huge progress in microalgal products in recent years, the commercialization and large-scale application of microalgae is still a formidable challenge, which mainly includes the technical and economic aspects, including how to reduce the huge energy consumption required for harvesting, reduce pollution risks and increase the access to high value-added products. We want to promote and expand the technological progress of microalgae industrialization, from micro-genetic engineering, and metabolic pathway research to new processes combined with materials, and finally achieve large-scale production. It is hoped that the low-cost and energy-saving production of microalgae and the utilization of carbon dioxide and pollutants will benefit to both human health and global economic issues.
We are encouraging original research in two aspects, (i) novel process of large-scale microalgal production with waste nutrients as alternative raw materials, (ii) comprehensive and specific functional characteristics of microalgal ingredients to advance the actual application of microalgal-based bioproducts.
In this Research Topic, we welcome the submission of all article types related to microalgae production, with a preference for Original Research, Reviews, and Opinions, focusing on the following:
• Food and feed processing
• Cosmetics
• Chemical industry
• Microalgae utilization for aquaculture and livestock industries.
• Hybrid system of water treatment and biocarbon conversion
• Studies on flue gas CO2 fixation by microalgae
• New concepts on high value-added bioproducts production
Keywords: microalgae, carbon neutrality, water treatment, food and feed processing, cosmetics, chemical industry
