Background

The examination of the water, energy, and food (WEF) nexus is pivotal for understanding sustainable resource management and climate mitigation strategies. Focusing on the interlinkages of these three sectors offers insights into significant impacts on climate actions and resource conservation efforts, as indicated by recent studies. Issues such as land use changes, human activities' influence on river basins, and the security of the WEF nexus from local to national scales underscore the complex interrelations among these critical resources. Despite significant advances, there remains a pressing need for further research that bridges the gap between pilot studies and large-scale applications that can affect policy and sustainable development goals.

This Research Topic aims to address the complex dynamics within the WEF nexus by analyzing innovative approaches and evaluating real-world implementations. It seeks to uncover how transformations in one sector can beneficially impact others, thereby advancing comprehensive sustainability goals, such as those outlined in various Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The goal is to foster solutions that not only understand but enhance the mutual benefits of an integrated WEF management approach.

To gather further insights into these dimensions, we welcome contributions that are not limited to but include the following areas:

• Evaluation of land use impacts within WEF frameworks
• Innovations in WEF nexus modeling and its implications for policy
• Cross-sectoral resource efficiency and its enhancement through technology
• Case studies on effective WEF nexus practices at various scales
• Reviews and critical analyses of integration strategies through a WEF lens
