Background

Ocular surface disorders encompass a spectrum of pathological conditions ranging from benign to severe, vision-threatening ailments affecting the anterior segment of the eye. The prevalence of these disorders has been on the rise due to various factors such as demographic shifts towards an ageing population, increased exposure to environmental pollutants, and lifestyle habits. These conditions significantly impact the quality of life, leading to a pressing need for a deeper understanding and better management strategies. Recent studies have highlighted the complex interplay between genetic predisposition, environmental triggers, and immunological responses in the development and progression of ocular surface disorders. However, despite these advancements, there remain significant gaps in our knowledge, particularly concerning the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying these conditions. Addressing these gaps is crucial for developing more effective diagnostic and therapeutic approaches.

This research topic aims to elucidate the intricacies of ocular surface disorders at molecular, cellular, and systemic levels. The primary objectives include unravelling the etiological factors, deciphering the pathophysiological mechanisms, and understanding the complex interactions between genetic, environmental, and immunological factors. By advancing our understanding in these areas, the research seeks to refine clinical management strategies and improve patient outcomes. Specific questions to be addressed include: What are the genetic and environmental determinants of ocular surface disorders? How do these factors interact at the molecular and cellular levels to drive disease progression? What novel therapeutic approaches can be developed to restore ocular surface integrity and function?

To gather further insights into the complexities of ocular surface disorders, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:

- Aetiology and Risk Factors: Investigating genetic and epigenetic determinants, environmental factors, and lifestyle influences.
- Pathophysiology: Examining cellular and molecular mechanisms, focusing on inflammatory responses, immune reactions, and tissue remodelling.
- Ocular Surface Microbiome: Assessing its role in maintaining homeostasis.
- Clinical Spectrum: Highlighting varied clinical presentations and their impact on quality of life.
- Diagnostics: Identifying and validating biomarkers for early and accurate diagnosis, and utilizing advanced imaging technologies.
- Treatment Strategies: Evaluating existing treatments and exploring novel therapeutic options, including regenerative approaches like stem cell therapies and tissue engineering
