About this Research Topic

Submission deadlines

  1. Manuscript Submission Deadline 30 April 2026

  2. This Research Topic is currently accepting articles.

Background

Coastal wetlands, including mangroves, salt marshes, seagrass beds, and shallow coastal water bodies, are invaluable ecosystems facing threats from human activities and climate change. These habitats support biodiversity and mitigate floods. This Research Topic aims to explore advanced remote sensing techniques to enhance the monitoring, management, and conservation of coastal wetlands. Specifically, the objectives are:

1. To optimize the management and integration of multi-sensor satellite data to gain deeper insights, enable accurate decision-making, and improve predictions regarding coastal wetland ecosystems.

2. To leverage artificial intelligence methods to enhance the accuracy and reliability of satellite image processing and analysis for coastal wetlands, supporting their sustainable management.

3. To investigate innovative approaches utilizing multi-sensor data, including in-situ, proximal, and remote sensing, to monitor these vulnerable coastal ecosystems continually.

This Research Topic will accept original research and methods manuscripts. Possible themes include, but are not limited to:

· Advances in remote sensing techniques for monitoring coastal wetland extent, habitat, and vegetation parameters;

· Integration of multi-sensor satellite and airborne data for comprehensive assessments of coastal wetland ecosystems;

· Application of machine learning and artificial intelligence in coastal wetland remote sensing analysis and classification;

· Remote sensing of coastal wetland biogeochemical processes;

· Monitoring coastal wetland responses to environmental stressors;

· Assessing coastal wetland ecosystem services using remote sensing;

· Combining remote sensing, in-situ observations, and modeling for coastal wetland monitoring and management;

· Analyzing coastal wetland cover change using multi-temporal satellite and UAV imagery;

· Approaches for coastal wetland restoration planning and effectiveness monitoring;

· Quantifying and validating coastal wetland remote sensing products.
