Background

The MDIC’s Medical Extended Reality (MXR) Summit was held in Washington DC on April 17th-18th, 2024. This event convened leaders and key stakeholders from industry, academia, and government in the fields of Medical Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR), and Mixed Reality (MR). The summit showcased the latest technological advancements and explored current medical applications, aiming to enhance clinical innovation and adoption. It also addressed recent regulatory shifts in the MXR landscape. This topic is an open call to clinicians, academics, regulators, and the MXR industry to summarize key developments, opportunities, and challenges, offering insights to capture the current state of the Medical Extended Reality ecosystem.

In continuation of the FDA 2020 Workshop on MXR, the goals of the MDIC MXR2024 Summit and the related call for a Research Topic in Frontiers include:

Capturing new developments since the FDA 2020 Workshop on MXR. This involves assessing what has changed, current progress, and the major challenges faced today, along with strategies to address these challenges. Discussing the implementation challenges as innovative MXR devices struggle to transition effectively from the development stage to clinical use and widespread adoption. Capturing the current state of regulatory science and fostering an inclusive and transparent dialogue with the FDA.
