Background

Membrane-based separation technology serves as a pivotal solution for addressing global challenges, including water scarcity and environmental pollution. Moreover, it acts as an essential driving force in advancing the green and sustainable development of industries. Nevertheless, several critical issues remain unresolved, such as insufficient permeability, limited selectivity, inadequate stability, and reduced durability, which collectively hinder the further advancement of separation membranes. Continuous breakthroughs are needed from perspectives such as material innovation and mechanism exploration. The objective of this Research Topic is to advance the science and technology of nanomaterials-based membranes by gathering and disseminating state-of-the-art research that explores their potential for achieving exceptional separation performance, especially in liquid environments.

We would like to focus on the following areas:
1. Development of novel nanomaterials-based membranes, including 0D, 1D, 2D, 3D, or composite membranes incorporating nanomaterials that address specific challenges;
2. Detailed analysis of membrane physical structure and chemical characteristics;
3. Establishment of optimal mass transfer models to enhance understanding of the separation process in liquid systems and guide membrane processes;
4. Promotion of nanomaterials-based membrane applications in liquid systems, e.g., water purification, wastewater treatment, bioseparations, and hemodialysis;
5. Exploration of multifunctional membrane separation techniques, such as separation coupled with specific adsorption, catalytic conversion, reactive membrane separation, etc.

We welcome the submission of Original Research, Review, Mini Review, and Perspective articles covering themes including, but not limited to:
• Preparation of novel nanomaterials and membrane construction
• New methods for the analysis of membrane physical structure and chemical properties
• Mass transfer models and membrane processes
• Membrane applications in liquid systems
• Multifunctional separation membranes
