Background

The maritime industry is facing growing challenges related to environmental sustainability, operational efficiency, and resilience. In response, the integration of Big Data and artificial intelligence (AI) is emerging as a key enabler for transforming maritime operations towards more sustainable and efficient practices. Big Data technologies provide the capacity to analyze vast amounts of information, while AI can derive insights and make decisions that optimize maritime processes. Together, these technologies have the potential to revolutionize ship scheduling, weather routing, environmental monitoring, and overall supply chain management.

This special issue aims to highlight the latest research and innovations in the application of Big Data and AI to address critical challenges in maritime operations. We invite researchers and industry experts to contribute their findings and case studies, demonstrating how Big Data and AI can be leveraged to enhance sustainability, safety, and economic efficiency in the maritime domain. We particularly welcome contributions that propose novel algorithms, practical frameworks, and methodologies for advancing maritime operations through digital innovations.
We invite original research articles, case studies, and review papers on topics including, but not limited to:
• Data-driven analysis of maritime activities' impact on ocean climate and environmental health
• AI-driven carbon footprint analysis and emission reduction in maritime operations
• AI-driven ship scheduling and route optimization for fuel efficiency and emission reduction
• Big Data analytics for tracking and mitigating illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing
• Applications of AI in meteorological navigation for safe and efficient voyages
• Machine learning and AI for designing resilient and efficient shipping networks
• Predictive analytics for preventive maintenance and reduced operational disruptions
• Real-time decision-making tools for port operations and logistics
• Integration of IoT and sensor networks for environmental monitoring in maritime contexts
• Digital innovations for enhancing maritime safety and incident response
• AI and Big Data for optimizing alternative fuel utilization in maritime transportation
