Peripheral nerve disorders—ranging from traumatic nerve transections to chronic nerve entrapment syndromes—pose a major clinical and scientific challenge, often leading to persistent functional impairments, chronic pain, and reduced quality of life. Despite decades of surgical experience and research, full functional recovery remains elusive in many cases, particularly in large-gap injuries, delayed interventions, or cases involving nerve compression and fibrosis.
This Research Topic aims to highlight state-of-the-art strategies for peripheral nerve reconstruction and repair, integrating both experimental and clinical perspectives. The collection brings together original research, clinical reports, and reviews that reflect the growing complexity and interdisciplinarity of this field.
Clinically, significant advances have been made in microsurgical techniques, nerve decompression procedures, and reconstructive strategies involving autografts, processed allografts, and synthetic conduits. Innovations such as ultrasound-guided neurolysis, nerve transfers, and biomaterial-assisted reconstructions are expanding therapeutic options.
This Research Topic welcomes contributions on topics including: • Clinical studies on peripheral nerve repair, reconstruction, and decompression procedures • Surgical outcomes and innovations in the treatment of nerve entrapment syndromes • Pre-clinical models mimicking complex nerve injury scenarios (e.g., chronic, delayed, or large-gap lesions) • Biomaterials and bioengineering approaches for nerve guidance, regeneration, and neuroprotection • Translational strategies bridging the gap between experimental success and clinical implementation
By integrating clinical insights with cutting-edge laboratory discoveries, this Research Topic aims to foster collaboration among neurosurgeons, orthopedic and plastic surgeons, neuroscientists, and biomedical engineers. Our ultimate goal is to advance the understanding and treatment of peripheral nerve pathologies and to accelerate the translation of emerging technologies into effective clinical practice.
