Background

The field of dental implants has seen substantial growth, leading to a parallel increase in implant-related complications, such as peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis. Peri-implantitis is a progressive inflammatory condition impacting both soft and hard tissues surrounding dental implants. It frequently starts as peri-implant mucositis, marked by soft tissue inflammation without bone loss, which can escalate to peri-implantitis if untreated. Symptoms such as bleeding, swelling, discharge, and pain highlight the critical need for early intervention to prevent bone loss and potential implant failure.

Management of peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis primarily involves mechanical debridement to disrupt biofilms around implant surfaces. Over time, various non-surgical strategies, including modified instrumentation, air abrasion, lasers, and antimicrobial treatments, have evolved.
