Background

Hyaluronic Acid (HA), a naturally occurring glycosaminoglycan with unique viscoelastic, hydrating, and tissue- repairing properties, is increasingly recognized as a valuable therapeutic agent in the field of genitourinary medicine. Originally appreciated for its role in dermatology and orthopedics, HA has gained growing attention in urology and urogynecology due to its favorable safety profile and generative potential. Despite this promising trend, current research is still in its early stages, and numerous gaps remain in understanding HA’s full potential and its long-term effects within this context.

This Research Topic aims to explore emerging perspectives and current evidence regarding the application of HA in genitourinary disease affecting both genders. In female urology, HA has demonstrated promising results in the treatment of conditions such as interstitial cystitis/ bladder pain syndrome, radiation cystitis, and recurrent urinary tract infections, particularly through intravesical instillations that help to restore the glycosaminoglycan layer of the urothelium. In urogynecology, topical and intravaginal formulations of HA are increasingly used to manage vulvovaginal atrophy and genitourinary syndrome of menopause, either alone or in combination with other non- hormonal treatments.

Among men, HA is also being investigated for its potential role in the management of chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome and post- surgical tissue healing. Furthermore, the regenerative and anti-inflammatory properties of HA suggest a possible role in managing urethral strictures, radiation- induced urethral damage, or even as an adjunct in reconstructive urologic surgeries.

This Research Topic welcomes original research articles, reviews, and clinical case studies addressing the use of hyaluronic acid across various genitourinary conditions. Contributions that explore new formulations, delivery system, mechanism of action, and long- term outcomes are particularly encouraged. In addition, interdisciplinary perspectives integrating urology, gynecology, regenerative medicine, and bioengineering will be considered of high value.

By collecting diverse insight from both clinical and transitional research, this Research Topic intends to shed light on the evolving role of HA and stimulate future innovation in the personalized and minimally invasive management of genitourinary disease.
