Background and Scope

Mechanical thrombectomy has revolutionized the management of acute ischemic stroke (AIS), especially in cases of large vessel occlusion (LVO). Since the landmark trials in 2015, rapid evolution in thrombectomy devices has continued to redefine endovascular stroke therapy. From first-generation stent retrievers and aspiration catheters to newer combination devices and robotic systems, innovations in design, materials, and procedural strategies have significantly improved recanalization rates and clinical outcomes. Despite these advances, several clinical and technological questions remain: Which devices offer the best efficacy and safety profiles? How does clot composition influence device selection? What are the optimal strategies for achieving first-pass success? How do emerging technologies like AI integration, smart catheters, and robotic systems shape the future of thrombectomy?

This Research Topic aims to gather cutting-edge research, expert perspectives, and clinical experiences related to the evolution and performance of mechanical thrombectomy devices in AIS. We welcome multidisciplinary contributions from clinicians, interventional neurologists, engineers, researchers, and industry experts to provide a comprehensive view of where the field stands and where it's headed.
