Background

External Ventricular Drainage (EVD) remains a cornerstone in the management of acute intracranial illnesses, playing a pivotal role, particularly in neurosurgery and neurocritical care. Despite its widespread use, variability persists in how it is employed across different institutions and regions, raising significant questions about optimal practice. Disparities exist in indications, insertion techniques, infection prophylaxis, monitoring, and weaning protocols, highlighting a need for consensus and standardization. Recent studies have delved into these areas, yielding insights into evidence-based indications while also spotlighting risks and complications related to EVD use. However, uniformity in practice and adoption of novel advancements remain challenges that necessitate further exploration.

This Research Topic aims to comprehensively explore the broad spectrum of EVD-related practices, addressing both conventional applications and innovations in the field. By examining evidence-based approaches and technical precision, alongside risks and patient outcomes, this topic seeks to clarify best practices and encourage future developments in EVD technology and management. Key questions include how to harmonize global practices, enhance device design, and improve training for healthcare providers to reduce complications and optimize patient results.

To gather further insights into the range of neurosurgical applications and EVD management, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:

- Evidence-based indications for EVD use in various intracranial conditions

- Technique optimization and standardization in EVD insertion and management

- Infection control measures specific to EVD procedures

- Innovations in EVD device design and functionality

- Multidisciplinary approaches to EVD training and protocol development

We encourage submissions from a broad array of disciplines, including contributions from neurosurgeons, intensivists, and nurses, focusing on original research and reviews related to EVD in settings such as traumatic brain injury, subarachnoid hemorrhage, and hydrocephalus. This exploration aims to foster a balanced dialogue around best practices, standardization, and innovation for the future of EVD applications.
