Background

The Research Topic "Circular Advances in Sorption Technologies" responds to the evolving challenges
faced by industry and society within the regulatory frameworks of the European Green Deal and the
Competitiveness Compass issued by the European Commission. In alignment with the EU’s vision for a
sustainable and competitive economy, this collection focuses on the pivotal role of sorption technologies in
enabling the transition toward a circular, low-carbon, and innovation-driven industrial system.

Key priorities include the decarbonization of industrial processes, particularly in energy-intensive sectors
such as chemicals, through the application of low-carbon sorption technologies and the implementation of
the Clean Industrial Deal. In addition, the Research Topic addresses the reduction of strategic dependencies by
promoting resilient, diversified, and clean supply chains, secured through sorption-based recovery and
recycling of critical raw materials and technologies. This Research Topic underscores the role of
environmental chemistry and sorption processes in shaping a resilient, circular, and climate-responsible
European economy, while remaining globally competitive.

Articles types welcomed include Original Research Papers, Reviews, Mini Reviews, Perspective
and Methods. Including but are not limited to the following themes:

• Decarbonization strategies for energy-intensive industries through novel sorption-based low-emission processes and clean industrial technologies

• Sustainable supply chains and material circularity via sorption-driven recovery, recycling, and
substitution of critical raw materials

• Green and clean sorption technologies, including advanced adsorbents, ion exchange systems,
and bio-based sorption materials

• Innovative sorption methods in environmental chemistry that enable resource efficiency,
pollution reduction, and environmental monitoring

• Cross-disciplinary approaches that integrate sorption technologies with systems thinking, policy
frameworks, or industrial ecology to support sustainable competitiveness
