Cardiac arrest and cardiogenic shock are among the most serious cardiovascular emergencies, contributing to significant risk of mortality and morbidity. Despite progress in acute care technologies and resuscitation techniques, patient outcomes for these conditions have not improved as swiftly as for other cardiac conditions. Central to overcoming this challenge is the time-sensitive nature of identification and treatment of cardiac arrest and cardiogenic shock to minimize detrimental effects of malperfusion. As a result, the there is a great need for early detection, development of robust management protocols, and integration of novel therapeutic approaches (e.g., biomarkers, artificial intelligence, machine learning, large language models etc.) tailored to enhance both survival rates and neurological recovery.
This Research Topic aims to harness and present state-of-the-art research, expert clinical insights, and pioneering strategies for the assessment and treatment of cardiac arrest and cardiogenic shock. Our primary objectives include fostering a deeper understanding of the underlying pathophysiology, improving early detection capabilities, advancing risk stratification, exploring new biomarkers, and evaluating cutting-edge temporary (e.g., extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, percutaneous ventricular assist devices, etc.) and long-term (e.g., left ventricular assist devices) circulatory support devices. By integrating these insights with innovative pharmacological treatments and refining post-resuscitation care practices, we hope to inform prevention and rehabilitation strategies.
The scope of this Research Topic is expansive yet directed to ensure a comprehensive exploration within the realms of cardiac arrest and cardiogenic shock interventions. We welcome articles that address a range of related themes, including but not limited to:
• Mechanistic insights and emerging biomarkers in cardiac arrest and cardiogenic shock • Innovations in pre-hospital and in-hospital cardiac arrest management • Early identification and risk stratification tools for cardiogenic shock • Short- and long-term outcomes of advanced mechanical circulatory support • Novel drug therapies, approaches to resuscitation, and protocolized care • Neurological and multi-organ outcomes after cardiac arrest and cardiogenic shock • Post-event rehabilitation and quality of life challenges, including the application of palliative care • Public health strategies and systems of care improvement
Additionally, we invite a variety of contributions, such as original research articles, narrative reviews, systematic reviews with or without meta-analyses, case reports, and perspectives. Through this interdisciplinary exchange, we aim to propel our collective knowledge and refine the management of these challenging cardiovascular conditions.
