Background

Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) and home blood pressure monitoring (HBPM) have become indispensable tools in contemporary hypertension diagnosis and management. Traditional office-based blood pressure measurements are frequently inadequate due to variability in readings and the "white coat effect," where patients exhibit elevated readings in clinical settings but not in their day-to-day environments. ABPM and HBPM offer a more extensive insight into a patient's blood pressure profile around the clock, providing a naturalistic view crucial for accurate diagnosis. ABPM, in particular, supplies granular data revealing circadian variations and identifying nocturnal patterns such as the absence of "nocturnal dipping” a significant risk factor for cardiovascular issues. Masked hypertension, undetectable in office settings but linked to heightened cardiovascular risks, can be effectively diagnosed through ABPM. Complementing this, HBPM permits patients to measure their blood pressure under normal living conditions, enhancing the precision of average readings and evaluating treatment efficacy over time, in addition to boosting patient involvement in their healthcare journeys.
