Background

Lipid metabolism plays a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis, a leading cause of cardiovascular disease morbidity and mortality worldwide. The interplay between lipoprotein metabolism, lipid accumulation, and vascular inflammation constitutes the cornerstone of atherogenesis and atherosclerosis progression.

Dysregulation in lipid metabolism, including high levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and triglycerides, and low levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, contributes significantly to atherosclerotic plaque formation and the progression of atherosclerotic diseases. Despite current therapeutic strategies aimed at lipid lowering, there remain unmet needs in fully understanding and effectively targeting lipid-related mechanisms involved in atherosclerosis.

This Research Topic seeks to elucidate the intricate relationships between lipid metabolism and atherosclerosis, offering new insights into the molecular pathways and therapeutic targets. By advancing our understanding, the goal is to improve strategies for prevention and treatment of atherosclerotic conditions.

To explore the comprehensive role of lipid metabolism in atherosclerosis, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:

o Molecular mechanisms linking lipid metabolism to atherogenesis.

o Role of lipoproteins in atherosclerotic plaque development and stability.

o Investigation of genetic factors influencing lipid regulation and atherosclerosis risk.

o New biomarkers for lipid-related cardiovascular risk assessment.

o Novel lipid-lowering therapies and their impact on atherosclerosis progression.

o Impact of lifestyle and dietary interventions on lipid profiles and cardiovascular health.

The objective of this Research Topic is to foster a deeper understanding of lipid metabolism in the context of atherosclerosis, paving the way for innovative approaches to prevent and manage atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases.
