Background

Aortic and peripheral arterial and venous diseases pose significant challenges in cardiovascular medicine, affecting both morbidity and mortality. Aortic conditions, including aneurysms, dissections, and atherosclerosis, are often asymptomatic in early stages, complicating early diagnosis. These diseases are influenced by genetic factors, hypertension, and atherosclerosis, and can lead to severe complications such as rupture and organ ischemia. Peripheral arterial disease (PAD), caused by the narrowing or blockage of arteries, can result in critical limb ischemia or amputation. Additionally, peripheral venous diseases, such as chronic venous insufficiency and varicose veins, are linked to vascular dysfunction and venous stasis, causing symptoms ranging from discomfort to ulcers.

Recent advances in imaging technologies like high-resolution ultrasound, CT angiography, and MRI have improved early detection of these conditions. Evolving treatment strategies, including lifestyle modifications, pharmacotherapy, minimally invasive procedures, and surgery, are enhancing patient outcomes. However, challenges persist in optimizing individualized diagnostics and therapies, understanding the mechanisms driving disease progression, and addressing the complex interplay of genetic, environmental, and clinical factors.

In this Research Topic, we aim to highlight the latest developments in the diagnosis and treatment of aortic and peripheral arterial and venous diseases. The focus will be on advanced diagnostic techniques, including the integration of novel imaging methods and emerging tools such as artificial intelligence, which are enhancing early detection and improving clinical decision-making.
