The roles of bone-muscle crosstalk in diseases not confined to the motor system

The motor system determines body movement by taking advantage of anatomically connected bones and muscles. Moreover, as endocrine organs, bones and muscles produce osteokines and myokines to interact with each another. Furthermore, the interaction between bones and muscles is affected by other conditions, including chronical renal diseases, chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases, etc. Hence, we summarize the findings of bone-muscle crosstalk and propose potential strategies to ameliorate the skeletal or muscular symptoms of certain diseases. Overall, functional improvement of bones or muscles is beneficial to each other within the motor system. Furthermore, for diseases affecting organs such as the heart, kidney, lung, etc., enhancing muscle and bone health may contribute to preventing, attenuating symptoms and improving prognosis .
