Bovine besnoitiosis is a widely distributed, emerging parasitic disease caused by the protozoan Besnoitia besnoiti, which is present in several European countries. The clinical presentation of the disease can be acute or chronic, but infected animals are mostly asymptomatic, acting as a reservoir for the parasite. The disease is associated with important economic losses, making it necessary to implement control measures to mitigate the spread of infection. This work aimed to assess the distribution and evolution of bovine besnoitiosis in the Auvergne Rhône-Alpes region in France, from January 1, 2020, to July 1, 2023. Our results provide new evidence and detailed information on the prevalence and risk factors for the disease in a broad geographic area in France. The results add to the bulk of knowledge on bovine besnoitiosis in Europe and provide relevant information for the development of animal disease control policies. The authors thus believe that this work is suited for journal Frontiers in Parasitology.
