Human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs), including Human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) and human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs), are cells that have the capacity to self-renew by dividing and to become a variety of cells and tissues. In recent years, artificial germ cells, artificial embryos and reproductive organs derived from hPSCs have become the research frontier of developmental biology and reproductive biology, which provides a new perspective for understanding the mechanism of gametogenesis and embryonic development.

With the delay of reproductive age, environmental pollution and genetic mutations, global fertility rate is projected to continually decline. Since hPSCs have multipotential differentiation properties and are closely related to human reproductive development, future research on hPSCs will focus more on the field of reproductive health. Novel hPSCs established by gene editing technology and in vitro culture systems will certainly contribute to the development of artificial gametes, artificial embryos, and reproductive organs, which is expected to provide new directions for mechanistic understanding of human gametogenesis and embryo development, as well as new treatment options for infertility, especially for patients lacking healthy gametes and embryos.

The main objective of this Research Topic is to accumulate more information about the basic and clinical research of new hPSCs in artificial gametes, artificial embryos, and reproductive organs, with the aim of promoting the development and utilization of stem cells for basic research and clinical therapy.

We would like to provide a forum to prompt publication of original research articles, short reports, protocols, concise reviews and novel commentaries, potentially covering induced pluripotent stem cells, embryonic stem cells, formative pluripotent stem cells, formative pluripotent stem cells, artificial germ cells, artificial embryos, artificial reproductive organoids, germline stem cells, cancer stem cells, stem cell differentiation, stem cell genomics, stem-cell-based humanized animal models, in vitro and in vivo imaging of stem cells, stem niches, clinical insights, germ cell policies, and regenerative medicine. We will consider studies from any model system that provides insights into expanding fields of stem and progenitor cell biology, and we encourage submissions on human stem cells.

This Research Topic has five thematic subtopics, focusing on:
1. Establishment of new pluripotent stem cells and optimization of in vitro culture system.
2. Mechanisms and key factors of directed differentiation of stem cells.
3. Establishment and application of artificial sperm and artificial eggs.
4. Mechanism of artificial embryos in early embryonic development.
5. Exploration of PSCs in in vitro 3D culture of artificial testis, artificial ovary and artificial uterus and other organoids.
