Background

Artificial intelligence has become an integral part of our daily lives. Facial recognition on our phones, e-mail spam filtering, and recommendation systems on our shopping or entertainment platforms have become commonplace and part of our routines. In medicine, machine learning algorithms are already showing high predictive capability for adverse event and disease classification. At the same time, deep learning models are assisting physicians with imaging-based classification problems.

Recent technological advancements have also allowed surgeons to implement robotics, augmented reality, and virtual reality in the operating room to improve surgical precision and outcomes. The application of these ground-braking algorithms and technology in neurological surgery is an area of enormous interest and excitement.

The aim of this special issue is to highlight and collect high-quality research focused on advanced predictive analytics applied to neurosurgery, use of deep neural networks for classification problems, use of robotic systems in the operating room, use of augmented or virtual reality in neurosurgery, and others.

All original research articles, technical notes, and review articles focusing on applications of artificial intelligence or advanced technologies in neurosurgery are welcomed. Articles can focus on advanced predictive analytics, use of robotic systems, use of augmented or virtual reality, and any other innovative technique that improves outcomes of neurosurgical patients.

Keywords: Neurosurgery, digital technology, Machine Learning, Robotics, Augmented Reality, Artificial Intelligence
