Background

Obesity is a complicated, multifactorial disease of epidemic proportions. It is well established that obesity will promote conditions such as dyslipidemia, type II diabetes, and hypertension with a resulting increased risk of major cardiovascular events. However, obesity has its own pathophysiology and is a recurrent, chronic non-communicable disease.

Led by an international team of subject experts, this research topic will explore obesity and cardiovascular disease with a focus on the underlying pathophysiology. Sub-themes include but are not limited to:
• Adipocyte distribution and resulting metabolic or inflammatory consequences
• Adipocyte and vasculature cross-talk
• Extracellular vesicles in the plaque process
• Mitochondria dysfunction
