Background

Research on research integrity, research ethics, and Open Science has emphasized the crucial role of supervisors and research leaders in fostering a responsible and ethical research culture. Various pilots, policies, tools, training, models, and creative approaches have been proposed to equip supervisors and research leaders for this task. Yet, it is less clear how to evaluate, assess, or recognize whether supervisors and research leaders have been successful in promoting responsible research, and how these various approaches may work differently depending on the setting.

This Research Topic solicits contributions that address the evaluation and promotion of responsible supervision and leadership:

• How can supervisors be assessed for instilling a climate of integrity in their groups or during one-on-one supervisions?
• Which programs have been implemented by research management or research integrity officers to promote responsible leadership?
• How does a research organization evaluate whether its leadership is committed to an ethical research culture?
• What are appropriate incentives for promoting responsible supervision?
• Which approaches may work in which settings, and how does scalability play a role?
• Which approaches would be useful in sharing best practices and capacity building?

Contributions can be empirical, describing methods and (pilot) studies and using both quantitative and qualitative methods, as well as conceptual, analyzing what would be desirable and what would not, or detailing new models. This Research Topic seeks to bring together diverse, international perspectives on, and experiences in, evaluating and promoting responsible supervision and leadership in the context of research integrity, research ethics, and Open Science.
