Submission deadlines

  1. Manuscript Submission Deadline 21 December 2025

  2. This Research Topic is currently accepting articles.

Background

As we progress into the third decade of the 21st century, the fields of bioengineering and biotechnology have witnessed remarkable advancements, largely fueled by groundbreaking developments in biomaterials. New biomaterials, designed with advanced features, have become central to innovations in these fields, enabling significant technological leaps and applications. Despite these successes, ongoing challenges and the need for novel developments persist, particularly in addressing the complex demands of modern medical and technological applications.

Frontiers has organized a series of Research Topics to highlight the latest advancements in research across the field of bioengineering and biotechnology, with articles from the members of our accomplished Editorial Boards and the broader research community. This Research Topic aims to highlight the progress achieved recently within the biomaterials field, as well as to discuss the future challenges that need addressing to further advance the field. Contributions are sought that not only describe recent achievements but also outline necessary steps forward, thereby providing a comprehensive overview of the current state and potential future of biomaterial development.

This Research Topic welcomes article submissions that provide insight into subareas within the wider Biomaterials field (including, but not limited to):

• Biomimetic and cell-interactive materials
• Nano-assembled systems: self-assembly and nano-biology including mechanobiology at the nanoscale
• Novel materials for advanced biosensors and biomolecular electronics
• Biomaterial vectors for cell, gene, and nucleic acid and drug delivery
• Anti-corrosion strategies in materials development
• Emerging concepts of biocompatibility (hemocompatibility and tissue response),
• Frontiers in biomaterials for regenerative medicine: fundamentals and applications
• GMP production of biomaterials and scale-up
• Recent developments and perspectives in preclinical (animal) and clinical testing
• Recent approvals of biomaterials in clinical use by regulatory agencies
• Biomaterials for cultured meat production strategies
• Additive manufacturing of functional biomaterials
• Pico technology as a tool for receptor discovery and clinical translation
• Function of protein adsorption in foreign body reaction and biocompatibility
