Background

Given the success of The Role of the Gut Microbiota on Bone Mass in Health and Disease, we are pleased to announce the launch of Volume II.

The growing field of osteomicrobiology integrates microbiology with bone health, exploring the influence of the gut microbiome on bone structure and disease. Recent human and animal studies have underscored the microbiome as a critical regulator of bone mass. For instance, correlations have been observed between microbiome diversity and osteoporosis in humans, and different microbial compositions corresponding to variations in bone density. Moreover, animal experiments have demonstrated strain-specific effects of microbial presence on bone density, highlighting a complex interaction of genetic factors and microbial influence on skeletal homeostasis.

This Research Topic aims to deepen the understanding of how the gut microbiome affects bone health and to explore potential therapeutic interventions that target the microbiome for bone disease treatment. Researchers will delve into the mechanisms by which the microbiome modulates bone density, the role of microbial-induced immune responses, and the implications of microbiome alterations for bone strength and integrity. Additionally, the interaction between dietary, lifestyle factors and the microbiome in the context of bone health provides a promising avenue for novel therapeutic approaches.

To gather further insights within this defined scope, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:

• Interactions between intestinal microflora and bone density
• Advances in understanding how gut microbiota influences immune responses affecting bone mass
• Impact of antibiotics, probiotics, and other microbiome-targeted treatments on bone health
• Effects of lifestyle, diet, and illness on bone through microbiome interactions
• Novel mechanisms by which gut microbiota can be manipulated for bone disease therapy

The article types for this Research Topic will include basic, translational, epidemiological, and original research articles, as well as reviews from human, animal, and in vitro studies.
