Background

This is the second volume of the Research Topic titled 'Neurological and Neuropsychiatric Disorders Affecting Military Personnel and Veterans'. You may find the first volume linked here.

Active military personnel and veterans are confronted with unique neurological and neuropsychiatric challenges that distinguish them from the general population. These challenges often stem from traumatic experiences encountered during service, leading to both physical and mental health consequences. Notably, traumatic brain injury, heightened risks of neurological disorders such as dementia and stroke, and comorbid neuropsychiatric conditions are prevalent among this group. A significant concern is the negative feedback loop where brain injuries can lead to post-traumatic stress disorder, subsequently increasing the risk of conditions like Alzheimer’s dementia. Despite the recognition of these issues, there remain substantial gaps in understanding the unique challenges faced by military personnel and veterans.

This Research Topic aims to enhance the understanding of neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders affecting military personnel and veterans. By gathering insights from a global network of researchers, the objective is to address the existing gaps in diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of these conditions. The collection will focus on identifying the unique challenges faced by this population, with an emphasis on why certain conditions, such as stroke, present a higher risk for certain veteran populations compared to the general public.

To gather further insights into the unique challenges faced by military personnel and veterans, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:
- The impact of traumatic brain injury on long-term neurological health.
- The relationship between military service-related stress and neuropsychiatric disorders.
- Risk factors contributing to higher incidences of stroke and dementia in veterans.
- Innovative diagnostic tools and treatment strategies for neuropsychiatric conditions.
- The role of comorbid conditions in exacerbating neurological disorders.
- Policy and practice reviews aimed at improving healthcare delivery for veterans.
- Translational research bridging basic science and clinical applications for this population.
