Insights in ELSI in Science and Genetics 2024-2025

We are now entering the third decade of the 21st Century, and especially in the last years, the achievements made by scientists have been exceptional, leading to major advancements in the fast-growing field of ELSI (Ethical, Legal, and Social Implications) in Science and Genetics.

This editorial initiative of particular relevance, led by Dr. Dov Greenbaum (Reichman University), the Specialty Chief Editor of the ELSI in Science and Genetics section, Dr. Hannah Kim (Yonsei University), and Dr. Go Yoshizawa (Kwansei Gakuin University) seeks to highlight articles from members of the field, and particularly, our accomplished Editorial Board.

Current questions in the field revolve around the ethical use of genetic information, the legal frameworks governing genetic data, and the societal impacts of genetic technologies. Recent studies have highlighted both the potential benefits and the risks associated with genetic advancements, such as CRISPR and gene therapy. However, there is still a significant gap in understanding how to effectively address these ELSI concerns, necessitating a more comprehensive investigation into these critical issues.

This research topic aims to provide a thorough overview of the progress made in the past decade in the field of ELSI in Science and Genetics, while also identifying future challenges and opportunities. The main objectives include examining the latest developments, understanding the current challenges, and exploring future perspectives in the field. Specific questions to be addressed include: What are the most pressing ethical issues in genetic research today? How can legal frameworks be adapted to keep pace with technological advancements? What are the societal implications of emerging genetic technologies?
