Background

The use of antibiotics has been active since the past. However, most of the regimens applied in clinical practice depend on empirical ones, and the exploration of drug therapy based on the inter-individual drug behavior and response variability within the patient population is limited. The development of quantitative prediction tools for the behavior and response of antibiotics in the body to maximize their efficacy and prevent unnecessary drug side effects is highly demanded. In addition, the discovery of effective factors that affect the inter-individual pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic variability of antibiotics is expected to serve as a trigger to significantly improve the safety and efficacy of antibiotics in clinical practice.

The main purpose of the studies covered in this topic is to quantitatively elucidate the in vivo pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic characteristics of antibiotics. In addition, the proposal of quantitative prediction models that can rationally explain and interpret the elucidated in vivo pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic characteristics will be a key part of realizing precision medicine of antibiotics. Proposals for any applicable tools relevant to the precision medicine approach to antibiotics would also be welcome. This topic aims to significantly improve the clinical utility of antibiotics through precision medicine, and to contribute to the improvement of patients’ quality of life and the development of pharmacoeconomics.
